The $699.8 million Powerball jackpot was won by a lucky ticket holder in the state of California.
Iowa’s capital city of Des Moines According to officials, an unidentified California ticket sold in the last 40 drawings had all six winning numbers and thus won the roughly $700 million jackpot.
The winning numbers were 12, 22, 54, 66, and 69 on Monday night. The winning number on the Powerball was 15.
The Powerball jackpot grew to $699.8 million after over four months of failure and last-minute ticket sales, making it the seventh highest in U.S. lottery history. Since June 5, no one had walked away with the game’s big prize..
According to the game’s administrators, this was the first Monday night jackpot victory since the program introduced a third weekly drawing on August 23.
The winning ticket was purchased from a grocery store in Morro Bay, California’s central coast, according to the California Lottery. The winner will have the option of receiving an annuity payment over 29 years or receiving $496 million in cash. Taxes apply to both prize options.
As of this writing, the winner’s identity is a mystery.
According to the California Lottery, lottery officials won’t know the winner’s identity until a claim form is filed.
Two were sold in Massachusetts, one each in Virginia, Florida, and Arizona, and all were for the $1 million prize.
The 41st drawing broke the previous record of 36 drawings, which had stood since January 2021. The new record is 42 drawings. The compensation increases in direct proportion to the time elapsed since the last grand prize winner was announced.
Long odds (292.2 million to one) are meant to generate large jackpots that entice more players, which is why there has been a jackpot drought.
Although there has been a long wait for a winning jackpot ticket, lottery officials have underlined that many people have won smaller rewards, including 2.8 million players in the drawing held on Saturday alone. The cash prizes ranged from one million to four million dollars.
A total of 45 states, the District of Columbia, as well as the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, participate in the Powerball lottery.
