Kid Cudi’s Wedding Dress Was the Most Daring Look at the CFDA Awards.
There were plenty of bright (and, of course, gorgeous) appearances to take in on the red carpet of Tuesday night’s CFDA Fashion Awards, from Zendaya’s showstopping Vera Wang two-piece to Squid Game actor HoYeon Jung’s draped Louis Vuitton gown. However, few outfits had the same instant effect as Kid Cudi’s. The rapper and artist arrived at the event at New York City’s The Grill Room wearing a bespoke wedding gown by ERL, the hot West Coast label created in 2018 by American Emerging Designer of the Year contender Eli Russell Linnetz.
This was no ordinary wedding gown, though. The dress was made of exquisite white lace and had gloved sleeves and an ankle-length bell skirt; a tuxedo jacket with ivory lapels, cream-colored shoes decorated with sparkling crystal flowers, and a veil completed the outfit. Meanwhile, in a traditional black-and-white tuxedo, the designer escorted Cudi to the event—and, in a sly homage to the bride and groom motif, even raised Cudi’s veil before they clasped hands in front of the assembled photographers.
This isn’t Cudi’s first time wearing a dress to make a statement. For his appearance on Saturday Night Live in April, the artist donned a flowery Off-White gown that paid tribute to one of his inspirations, Kurt Cobain, who wore a similar design for a Nirvana concert in 1989. Cudi’s bright pink hair and smokey makeup brought a bit of grunge-inspired flare to his attire for the CFDA Awards. Cudi may not be heading down the aisle any time soon, but he still knows how to make a red carpet disappear.

The style also serves as a nice representation of Linnetz’s eccentric aesthetic universe. The designer, who first made his name as a creative director and photographer for Kanye West and Lady Gaga, is known for putting unexpected twists on classic American sartorial staples—just look at A$AP Rocky’s weird and wonderful kaleidoscopic cape, which was repurposed from a thrifted quilt, worn to this year’s Met gala. Subverting the conventional wedding gown at the CFDA Awards is all in a day’s work for Linnetz.
The look was completed with a pendant necklace with a Black Jesus motif, which was especially appropriate for a night that ended up serving as a brilliant celebration of Black design talent, with Christopher John Rogers, Grace Wales Bonner, Telfar Clemens, Edvin Thompson, Aurora James, and Dapper Dan all taking home awards. Cudi demonstrated once again why he’ll always be one of hip-most hop’s exciting style renegades with his cool and carefree approach toward genderless dressing—and the touch of something more profound through the modest message of his jewelry.
