Silk Sonic combo Bruno Mars and Anderson Paak launched the 2021
the American Music Awards in 2021 on Sunday evening, fresh off the release of their collaborative album An Evening With Silk Sonic.
Taylor Swift won the award for favourite female pop artist prior to the show’s commencement, breaking her own record for the most AMA victories in history. Pre-show winners were Doja Cat, who received three trophies, and Meghan Thee Stallion, who received two.
Cardi B, the show’s presenter, welcomed the audience with an exuberant introduction: “I ain’t going to lie, I’m anxious, I’m trembling,” she remarked of her hosting debut. Attendees in the pit around the stage were disguised, but VIP visitors in socially-distanced seats remained uncovered. Cardi also announced to the crowd that the evening’s theme will be “celebrating hometowns,” and she offered a shoutout to her own hometown, the Bronx in New York City.

Cardi B later addressed the crowd, appealing for Jojo Siwa to surprise her daughter — whom she shares with Migos’ Offset — as a Christmas present. Cardi stated that Siwa was completely booked for the holidays despite her best efforts.
“Let me tell you something,” Cardi added, “y’all rappers ain’t have nothing on Jojo Siwa.”
Siwa responded by taking the stage and presented the award for Favorite Pop Duo or Group. “I’m going to see what I can do, and I swear I’m going to try to make Christmas happen,” Siwa stated. The host also encouraged the audience to vote for Siwa on Dancing With The Stars that week, where she is a finalist.
Olivia Rodrigo, a first-time candidate who leads the nominations pool with seven nods, played “traitor” from her smash album SOUR, backed by her acoustic guitar. Rodrigo also won the prize for best new artist of the year. “Writing songs is my most favourite thing in the world, and I’m so thankful to everyone who’s supported my music,” the 18-year-old said in her acceptance speech.
BTS and Coldplay, Chlöe, Mneskin, Carrie Underwood and Jason Aldean, Tyler, the Creator, Walker Hayes, Bad Bunny with Tainy and Julieta Venegas, Kane Brown, and Walker Hayes were among the other performers. Diplo was the show’s inaugural musical curator, and the record producer DJ’ed the event all night.
Jennifer Lopez also played “On My Way,” a song from her forthcoming film Marry Me, which stars Lopez and Owen Wilson in a love musical. Clips from the film were shown onstage with the pop diva, who is also a three-time AMA winner.
New Kids on the Block and New Edition teamed forces for a medley performance of their best songs in their “Battle of Boston” collaboration. Throughout the concert, the Massachusetts-based boybands had the crowd on their feet and dancing.
Despite being confirmed to perform, AMA candidate and winner Megan Thee Stallion did not show up.
BTS, the Korean boyband and global phenomenon, received three prizes, including the evening’s top honour for artist of the year, as well as trophies for favourite pop pair or group and favourite pop song for their popular single “Butter.” BTS leads the night in victories, with three each from Doja Cat and Megan Thee Stallion.
Taylor Swift won her second Oscar of the night for best pop album for her quarantine-era record evermore, the companion album of Swift’s folklore. Swift delivered her acceptance speech digitally, thanking fans for their support of not just evermore, but also her recent re-release of Red (Taylor’s Version). “I’m so grateful to be in your life and to have you in mine,” the singer-songwriter remarked. Swift smashes her own record for the most AMAs won by an artist once again, currently holding 34 wins in her career.
Following their successful night, BTS finished the programme with a rendition of “Butter.”
The event, which will be broadcast live from Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theater at 8 p.m. ET on ABC, will also be available to watch on Hulu the following day.
