In the preseason opener versus Buffalo, these are four Detroit Lions to keep an eye on.
The Lions kick off their preseason against the Buffalo Bills at Ford Field on Friday at 7 p.m.
It will be the organization’s first taste of live game action under its new leadership, which includes Dan Campbell as head coach and Brad Holmes as general manager.
It’s also the first game for a number of players in Honolulu Blue.
Here are four guys to keep an eye on in Detroit’s preseason game versus the Bills.
Jared Goff, quarterback
Goff’s first game in the Motor City will be Friday’s preseason opener for the Lions.
Sure, it’s not a regular-season game, and he may only get in a couple of drives. However, many eyes at Ford Field will be on the former Los Angeles Rams quarterback to see how he performs in a real game.
Will he be “Mr. Checkdown” and the offense be cautious with him at the helm? Or will Goff and the offense take a chance and throw a few downfield passes?
It’ll be fascinating to see, and Lions supporters will undoubtedly be paying careful attention to his every move.
Amon-Ra St. Brown, WR
St. Brown entered a fantastic position in Detroit, with the chance to make an instant impact in the team’s receivers room.
The Lions don’t have a lot of great depth at wide receiver. As a result, starting Friday night, St. Brown will have a good chance of getting plenty of playing time.
Let’s see whether the former USC wideout and fourth-round selection (No. 112 overall) in the 2021 NFL Draft makes the most of his chance.
Penei Sewell, OL
Following Goff, Sewell is the player who, perhaps, will get the most attention from the Detroit fans on Friday.
Throughout the 2021 season, he’ll be one of the guys blocking for the Lions’ new quarterback.
The former Oregon star has a lot riding on his selection by Detroit at No. 7 overall in this year’s draft.
He hasn’t played in a live game since 2019, when he decided not to participate in the 2020 college football season.

So far in training camp, the 20-year-old has struggled with one-on-one exercises. So it’ll be interesting to watch how he performs against the Bills in his debut NFL game.
Dedrick Mills, RB
Several Lions running backs ahead of Mills on the depth chart have been struggling with ailments so far in training camp, including D’Andre Swift and Jermar Jefferson.
Detroit’s undrafted rookie, Mills, will get a chance to show his value in Detroit’s preseason opener against Buffalo.
With a strong showing Friday and in the Lions’ next two preseason games, the Nebraska product may dethrone Jefferson as the No. 3 quarterback.
As camp continues, it’ll be fascinating to keep an eye on the position struggle.
