Athletic Club and FC Barcelona drew 1-1 on Saturday,
sharing the points following a match in which both teams displayed mid-season form only two weeks into the 2021-2022 LaLiga season.
The roughly 11,000 people who packed the stands at Bilbao’s San Mames stadium were treated to some excellent football after 18 months of matches being played behind closed doors due to Covid-19.
The Blaugrana dominated possession even without Lionel Messi, but the hosts outshot them 16-9.
There were numerous chances in the first half, but the teams went into the locker rooms tied at 0-0.
Iñigo Martinez beat Neto with a superb header off Iker Muniain’s corner in the 50th minute to break the deadlock.
The visitors were kept at bay by the home side’s high press
until Frenkie de Jong hit the crossbar in the 74th minute, a minute before Memphis Depay equalized.

Athletic’s confidence was unaffected by conceding the equalizer,
and Depay’s failure to convert a chance in the 86th minute provided them with a boost heading into stoppage time.
Eric Garcia’s decision to pull down Nico Williams in the box in the 93rd minute got him a red card, but it may well have kept Barcelona in the game.
With four points, Barça is tied for first place with Mallorca and Valencia, although the Catalans are ahead on goal difference.
Athletics are now ranked ninth in the rankings with two points. ibn/dr EFE
