‘Star-crossed,’ Kacey Musgraves’ new album, has been announced.
Kacey Musgraves has released a new song, announced her new album, and revealed that it will be accompanied by a film.
All three albums are titled “star-crossed,” and the full-length will be released in just over two weeks, on September 10th.
It’s a 15-track album that’s “organized as a modern-day tragedy in three acts” and “tells a very intimate journey of pain and healing,” according to a press release.
The picture will be released on the same day in the United States, Latin America, Australia, the Nordics, and Canada, and will be streamed exclusively on Paramount+. Fans in the United Kingdom and other parts of the world will be able to watch it on MTV.
The 50-minute film, directed by Bardia Zeinali, will star Eugene Levy from Schitt’s Creek,
Victoria Pedretti from Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, Princess Nokia, RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Symone, and comedian Megan Stalter. Below is a trailer for the film, as well as the new title track.
In an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, Kacey discusses how a guided mushroom trip she experienced earlier this year inspired the album’s theme,
which is based on a three-part modern-day tragedy.
“I want the chance to change my trauma into something else, and I want to give myself that opportunity even if it hurts,” . Kacey says of her thinking before the trip, which she describes as “absolutely life-changing” and which inspired the title track.
The Grammy winner reveals that she came up with her own notion of what it means to “star-crossed” by studying the structure of ancient Greek tragedies.
“It’s to fucked up by love or chance. You’ve doomed from the start. She responds, “It just not written in the stars; it’s not for you.”
In Star-crossed, Kacey embraces the dark periods, saying that while it’s “daunting” to show the difficult parts of life,
she’s “eager” to share her journey through personal lyrics.
She explains, “I believe it would’ve been really difficult if I pretended like this past chapter didn’t happen to me,”
referring to her divorce from fellow singer Ruston Kelly last year. “You watched my Golden Hour highlight clip, and this is the opposite side of that, and there are some lovely elements to it as well.”
On September 10, Star-crossed will released, along with a film of the same name that will premiere on Paramount+
