On Friday morning, Kamala Harris became the first woman to hold presidential office in the United States — if only momentarily, since Joe Biden underwent a colonoscopy under anaesthesia.

“This morning, the president will go to Walter Reed Medical Center for a regular checkup,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said in a statement. The president will get a standard colonoscopy while he is there.
“During this period, the vice president will work from her West Wing office.”
Before 9 a.m., Biden departed the White House. The White House said that the findings of his medical examination will be made public.
Psaki announced just after noon that Biden had regained authority.
Psaki tweeted that the president “spoke with [Harris] and [Chief of Staff Ron Klain] at roughly 11.35am,” adding that Biden was “in excellent spirits and resumed his responsibilities at that time.”

Temporary power transfers have been done previously. As Psaki pointed out, when President George W. Bush underwent colonoscopies in 2002 and 2007, Vice President Dick Cheney served as acting president.
Unsurprisingly, Donald Trump is said to have defied convention. According to his former press secretary Stephanie Grisham, the 45th president declined anaesthesia in November 2019 when he underwent what was most likely a colonoscopy – which Grisham characterised as a “quite routine surgery” comparable to the one Bush had.
Trump denied anaesthesia because he didn’t want his vice president, Mike Pence, to be in control even for a short time, according to Grisham. Trump, she said, “didn’t want to be the punchline of a joke.”
All presidents’ health is meticulously monitored. Trump’s visit to Walter Reed – and the sloppy cover-up that followed it — fueled claims that he had a heart attack. Trump was the oldest president elected for the first time when he was sworn in, at the age of 70, until Biden overtook him.
Biden will celebrate his 79th birthday later this month. Doctors declared him “healthy, robust,” and “fit to properly fulfil the responsibilities of the President” during his most recent public physical in December 2019.
He has, however, survived two brain aneurysms, the second of which occurred when he was 45 years old in 1988. Should he become disabled for longer than is necessary for a routine operation, the US constitution’s 25th amendment allows Harris to take his position.
The amendment, which specifically specifies how temporary authority is granted, has never been fully implemented. Journalist Jonathan Karl revealed in a book released this week that top cabinet members considered it in the aftermath of the Capitol assault, citing fears about Trump’s mental state.
Harris is the first African-American and Asian woman to be elected vice president, but rumours suggest she is struggling and at odds with Biden.
She has been protected by the White House. Psaki told Politico on Thursday that there was “no doubt” that racism and sexism were part of the “attacks” on the vice president.
Ashley Etienne, Harris’s communications director, was rumoured to be leaving her position in December on Thursday night.
“People leave positions all the time,” James Clyburn of South Carolina, the House whip and a close Biden advisor, said CNN, amid significant speculation about what Etienne’s departure may signal.
“At the state level, I’ve been a part of changes.” And I’m well aware that during the first few months – perhaps a year – individuals may realise, “This isn’t precisely for me.” As a result, these things often occur.”
On Friday afternoon, Biden was scheduled to perform a crucial task: pardoning the White House Thanksgiving turkey.

Officials claimed she performed her responsibilities from her office in the White House’s West Wing.
Ms Harris, 57, is the first female vice president of the United States, as well as the first black and South Asian American.
Kamala Harris’s inexorable climb
The interim transfer of responsibilities in such situations, according to White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki, is not unusual and is part of the procedure outlined in the US constitution.
“As was the situation in 2002 and 2007, when President George W Bush had the same treatment,” she added in a statement.
Ms. Psaki later tweeted that Mr. Biden was “in excellent spirits” at the Walter Reed Medical Center in Maryland and has resumed his responsibilities as of 11:35 a.m. local time on Friday.
“He’ll stay at Walter Reed until the remainder of his normal physical is completed,” she continued.
Mr. Biden, the oldest US president, got his most recent complete medical checkup in December of this year.
His doctor issued a medical report at the time, stating that he was “healthy, robust, and fit to satisfactorily fulfil the responsibilities of the president.”
The president’s latest health check occurred on the same day that the US House of Representatives passed the monumental Build Back Better Act, worth $1.9 trillion (£1.4 trillion).
Mr. Biden’s platform includes a large-scale social expenditure and climate-change package.
