Despite Covering Her Face, Kim Kardashian Still Wore Makeup to the 2021 Met Gala
On Monday night, Kim Kardashian added a bit of quantum physics on the red carpet of the 2021 Met Gala, giving spectators the aesthetic equivalent of Schrödinger’s dilemma.
Kim was both fully glam and completely faceless at the star-studded fashion event held at the Metropolitan
Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, much like the cat in Schrödinger’s famous thought experiment—an animal
that exists in a liminal space between life and death until it is perceived by the viewer.
When she appeared wearing the Balenciaga equivalent of a blackout curtain, the usually heavily-exposed reality personality caused shockwaves throughout the internet.
The bespoke outfit included a turtleneck bodysuit underneath an enormous t-shirt dress with a long train, as well
as the brand’s trademark legging boots, matching gloves, and a head-obscuring mask similar to those used by
her ex-husband Kanye West during his Donda shows.
Demna Gvasalia, the creative director of Balenciaga and a regular West collaborator, followed Kim in an all-black sweatshirt, sweatpants, and face mask.
According to a source who talked to People, the billionaire’s estranged spouse was the driving force behind this spectacular Met gala event.
“Even though Kanye will not be there tonight, his presence will be felt on the carpet,” they said. “Kanye was the
one who introduced Kim to Demna and played a key role in her new connection with Balenciaga.”
“This style on Kim is like a new subculture and fashion statement,” the source said. Despite the lack of a
trademark or a face, everyone recognizes her.
Kanye gave her the confidence to use art to boost creativity and people’s imaginations. It’s the pinnacle of assurance.”

But just because there was no face doesn’t rule out the possibility of makeup.
Mario Dedivanovic, Kim’s makeup artist, posted a picture on Instagram of some of the items he used to prepare the star for fashion’s biggest night.
The Skims founder’s glam for the evening featured a lot of La Mer skincare, as well as Dedivanovic’s namesake cosmetics line’s brow pencil, brow gel, and eyeshadow palette. Behind-the-scenes pictures of the makeup artist preparing Kim’s skin for the event, as well as her final beauty look, was also posted, with the comment “Behind the mask” and a winky emoji.
