Although at the time of their debut, Anne Heche and Ellen DeGeneres were not warmly welcomed, they are now regarded as one of the first lesbian power couples in Hollywood.
Heche talked about her once-controversial romance in 2020 while still fighting for her life following a fiery crash last week that left her in “critical condition.”
On Season 29 of “Dancing With the Stars,” the 53-year-old “Six Days, Seven Nights” actress revealed meeting the 64-year-old comedian in 1997 at a Vanity Fair party had changed her life “forever.”
But when it came time for the couple to make their red carpet debut at Heche’s “Volcano” movie premiere in 1997, she was allegedly told that if she made the affair public, her job would be in jeopardy.
The actress claimed: “I had told them I was taking Ellen as my date and I was told if I took Ellen, I would lose my Fox contract.” I responded, “No thanks,” as she took hold of my hand and said, “Do what they say.”
Heche claimed that she went to the event with DeGeneres in defiance of the wishes of her film studios, but the two were “ushered out by security before the movie even ended.” According to reports, the actress was informed she was forbidden from attending her “own after-party for fear they would get pictures of me with a woman.”
The women continued to date despite the incident, and their relationship lasted for three and a half years. Although they had a close relationship, things between the “Finding Dory” actor and the “Vanished” actress weren’t always peaceful.

Heche made a suggestion that DeGeneres tried to dictate how she dressed while they were together in April 2021.
Heche shared a picture of herself and DeGeneres at the 1998 Golden Globes while recently reviewing her red carpet ensembles from the years for a TikTok video.
Why do I appear to be a hippie? It’s because Ellen told me not to wear anything sexy,” she said of the outfit.
More than just Heche’s appearance was impacted by her relationship with DeGeneres.
The “Save Me” actress allegedly told Page Six in October 2021 that she went ten years without acting in a studio film. “I was fired from a $10 million movie deal and never appeared in a studio film.”
Heche stated, “Those repercussions that happened, to me, are what has created a part of the change, so I have no regrets about dating DeGeneres. I take part in it. A badge of honour, indeed.
In August 2000, Heche and DeGeneres officially ended their relationship. We greatly value the 3 1/2 years we have spent together, and it is an amicable parting, they said in a joint statement they gave to People at the time.

A year later, DeGeneres told the Los Angeles Times that she was surprised by the breakup.
The former “Ellen DeGeneres Show” host stated, “She walked out the door and I haven’t spoken to her since, I don’t have the answers.”
Heche later wed Coleman Laffoon, with whom she had a son named Homer who is now 20 years old, from 2001 to 2009. With her former “Men in Trees” co-star James Tupper, whom she dated until 2018, she also has a 13-year-old son named Atlas.
DeGeneres has been wed to Portia de Rossi, an actress, since 2008.
