Ed Asner, the Oscar-winning actor
Asner earned seven Emmys in all, five for his role as Lou Grant and two for his roles as a German
immigrant in Rich Man, Poor Man, and as a sea captain in Roots.
Asner’s portrayal of Mary Tyler Moore’s employer was so successful that he reprised the part in a spinoff
series called Lou Grant, for which he won two Emmys in 1978 and 1980.
“There’s nothing more gratifying than hearing rip-roaring laughter from an audience,” Asner told The
Hollywood Reporter of his time on the Mary Tyler Moore Show.
Asner served as the president of the Screen Actors Guild for two years, from 1981 to 1985, in addition to
his acting career.
Asner, a self-described “old-time leftist,” was a vocal opponent of President Ronald Reagan’s government
in the 1980s, especially on America’s participation in El Salvador’s civil war, and continued to speak out for
progressive issues throughout Trump’s presidency.
Asner was born in Kansas City, Missouri, and attended the University of Chicago for a semester before
being conscripted into the Army and served in France in 1951.
Following his military duty, he appeared in a number of productions in Chicago and New York, including
the Broadway production Threepenny Opera.
Asner gave an interview to The Hollywood Reporter shortly before his death, in which he addressed his
acting career, the COVID-19 epidemic, and even his feelings on the Biden administration.
When asked what was left on his bucket list, Asner mentioned his family.
“Suribachi is a mountain that I have yet to climb! No, I’m simply making sure I’ve provided enough for my family.”
