Following the alleged high school’s defeat against IMG Academy, more facts about the Bishop Sycamore football scandal have surfaced.
Bishop Sycamore’s football expertise was calling into doubt over the weekend, and the team’s coach was dismissing as a result.
In August, IMG Academy’s top football squad squared off against Bishop Sycamore, an Ohio-based school, and the outcome was not beautiful.
Despite the fact that the contest supposedly featured two strong high school football teams, IMG Academy prevailed with a 58-0 victory.
The IMG College at Bradenton, Florida, is consistently ranked as one of the best schools in the nation,
producing many four- and five-star players each year.
Bishop Sycamore told ESPN that it was competing on a comparable level, but doubts about the program’s
strength and authenticity emerged soon after its nationally broadcast thrashing.
Bishop Sycamore dismissed head coach Roy Johnson as a result of the incident.
The decision was made public on Tuesday by the institution.
Andre Peterson, the school’s director, claimed “a number of factors” played a role in Johnson’s dismissal,
including the coach’s injury tracking and a potential fraud allegation.
“Roy has honestly been like a younger brother to me in the sense that there were certain things that we
wanted to do better and could have done better when we were establishing Bishop Sycamore,” Peterson
told USA Today.w. We’ve simply mutually
agreed to split ways.”
“I like him as a guy, but I simply felt he ought to stand down and go right no
Bishop Sycamore is say to have its headquarters in Columbus, Ohio. However, according to The Sporting
News, the school may not be legitimate.
Schools with the name “Bishop” are typically affiliated with the Catholic Church and named after local
bishops or past bishops.
Throughout its existence, a Diocese at Columbus, Ohio, has not had any Bishop Sycamores.
Bishop Sycamore is an online charter school that kids may attend, according to the Massillon
Independent. Furthermore, the school is not including in the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s
school directory, raising additional questions.
Bishop Sycamore is allegedly a Texas Christian Athletic League school, rather than an OHSAA institution.
However, Bishop Sycamore isn’t the conference’s sole non-Texas school; Ocean Springs Grace Baptist
Church in Mississippi is also a member. Bishop Sycamore is still on the schedule for the 2021 season at
Duncanville High School in Texas.
To say the least, Bishop Sycamore’s football experience is dubious.
The Centurions don’t have a lot of history behind them. There have been no blog entries on the football
squad since May 21, according to the school’s official website, which dates back to April 2021.
You’d think there’d be some sort of season preview material if the school was seting to start the football
season.
Furthermore, the school’s website’s “About Us” and “Staff” sections are completely empty.
The “Timetable” page just reads “coming soon” for the 2021 schedule.
More:
On August 21, 2021, a GoFundMe campaign was created in Bishop Sycamore’s honour.
Bishop Sycamore is a “new football programme being formed in Columbus,” according to the GoFundMe page’s description, and plays a “national schedule that is rated fourth in the country.”
The campaign, which had only collected $140 out of a $20,000 target, is now closed to further contributions.
Bishop Sycamore has planned games against DeMatha (Md. ), Duncanville, and St. Thomas More as of
Tuesday morning, according to MaxPreps (Conn.). The Centurions were 0-6 last season, with a 227-42
deficit.
That gruelling routine is starting to fade away. DeMatha cancelled its game against Bishop Sycamore on
Tuesday afternoon, according to USA Today.
The competition was initially set for October 1 at the Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex in
Landover, Maryland.
“After doing extensive investigation and consulting with our coaching staff, we have chosen to cancel the
game with Bishop Sycamore because they have ineligible players and it would be a liability problem,”
DeMatha Catholic High School president Fr. James R. Day told USA Today. “This, we believe, is the best
option.”
The strange scheduling didn’t stop there.
Bishop Sycamore’s game versus Sto-Rox, a high school in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, was not
included on MaxPreps’ schedule on this past Friday.
Sto-Rox beat Bishop Sycamore 19-7, according to TribLive, and then Bishop Sycamore played IMG
Academy on Sunday.
The roster for Bishop Sycamore is likewise suspect. For example, quarterback Jailen Knight started against
IMG Academy and is a three-star recruit in the 2023 class, according to his Twitter account.
Knight’s Hudl profile, on the other hand, indicates that he attends Baltimore’s Perry Hall High School.
Knight’s 247Sports recruitment page shows him as an unrecruited quarterback who will graduate in 2021.
Meanwhile, Hudl lists Bishop Sycamore quarterback Trillian Harris as a senior quarterback. Harris, on the
other hand, is listed on 247Sports as a 2021 California quarterback who was not recruiting.
Whether or not Bishop Sycamore is a genuine programme, it was very risky for a team to play on Friday
and then play on Sunday against a team like IMG Academy, which has some of the best athletes in the
nation.
