Gaspard Ulliel, the French actor who starred in “It’s Only the End of the World” and Marvel’s planned “Moon Knight” series, died Wednesday in a ski accident in the French Alps, according to news agency AFP. He was 37 years old at the time.
On Tuesday, the Cesar Award winner was skiing in the Savoie area when he collided with another skier and sustained significant head injuries. He was flown to a hospital in Grenoble by helicopter. According to the AFP, local officials have launched an inquiry into the disaster.
Ulliel was a well-known French actor who collaborated with highly acclaimed European and international directors. He made his acting debut at the age of 12 in the French TV film “Une Femme En Blanc” (“A Woman in White”). Following minor roles in Christophe Gans’ “Brotherhood of the Wolf,” Jean-Paul Salomé’s “Belphegore: Le Fantôme du Louvre,” and Michel Blanc’s “Embrassez qui vous voulez,” he landed his first main role in André Techiné’s “Les Egarés” in 2003, alongside Emmanuelle Beart.He made his English-speaking debut four years later in Peter Webber’s “Hannibal Rising.”
In Bertrand Bonello’s “Saint Laurent,” which competed at Cannes, he produced a strong performance as the legendary French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent. Ulliel also appeared in Xavier Dolan’s “It’s Only the End of the World,” opposite Marion Cotillard, Lea Seydoux, and Vincent Cassel; Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s “A Very Long Engagement,” and Bertrand Tavernier’s “La Princesse de Montpensier,” among others. All three films participated in the Cannes Film Festival.

The actor’s talent representative refused to comment when contacted by Variety. Ulliel is survived by his 6-year-old son, Orso, and his French model and singer girlfriend, Gaelle Petri. The funeral will be conducted in Paris on Thursday.
