Watch 14 minutes of gameplay from Hogwarts Legacy, the highly anticipated Harry Potter role-playing game.
Hogwarts Legacy, the forthcoming open-world Harry Potter RPG, had its first official gameplay reveal from developer Avalanche Software during a special PlayStation State of Play webcast that showed off 14 minutes of video from the game ahead of its release date later this year.
(Despite its Sony-hosted launch, Hogwarts Legacy will be available on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X / Series S in addition to the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.)
Players will be able to design their own character, be assigned to one of the four Hogwarts houses, and enrol in courses (though they will enter as a late-fifth-year student, probably to prevent a serious RPG starring an 11-year-old).

With the ability to mix and combine “dozens” of spells in duels, combat will include deploying diverse spell combinations to exploit certain opponent vulnerabilities or skills. As they move through the game, players will be able to personalise their characters with magical equipment and powers.
Although Hogwarts Legacy has a same location with the other games in the series, it is set in the 1800s, decades before the events of either the original novels or the more current Fantastic Beasts film trilogy, so don’t expect to meet many famous people. Instead, the plot will centre on a potential goblin revolt against the Wizarding World (which tends to occur with alarming frequency), as well as the typical cast of evil wizards and frightening monsters.
Hogwarts Legacy was originally scheduled to be released in 2021, but was pushed back to 2022 soon after its introduction. The game has also sparked debate: its primary designer resigned from the project after making controversial YouTube videos endorsing the Gamergate movement. Following a string of transphobic remarks made by the author online, Warner Bros. had to stress that Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling isn’t directly engaged with the game. “While J.K. Rowling was not directly engaged in the development of the game, her incredible collection of work serves as the basis for all Wizarding World ventures,” the business noted. “This isn’t a fresh J.K. Rowling tale.”
This Christmas season, Hogwarts Legacy will be available on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X / Series S.
