Gail Lerner, well known for her work on Black-ish and Will & Grace, will helm the Cheaper by the Dozen adaptation in 2022. This is the third film adaptation of Frank B. Gilbreth Jr.’s 1948 novel, Cheaper By the Dozen, written with his sister, Ernestine Gilbreth Carey. Frank and Ernestine come from a family of twelve children, and their book is filled with wonderful memories of growing up in a large family. Perhaps the most prominent member of the family was their father, who reasoned that the efficiency he brought to industrial assembly lines could be used to managing his 14-person household.
Twentieth Century Studios and Walt Disney Pictures are now presenting a new version of Cheaper By the Dozen, which reimagines the exploits of this huge family through a contemporary viewpoint. The film retains the Baker surname and 10 children from the 2003 film Cheaper By the Dozen, rather than the original twelve. Paul and Zoey Baker are a mixed-race couple who married and brought their children from prior marriages together to create a blended family in this 2022 version. They run a family company together while attempting to keep their 10 offspring, or hooligans, out of mischief.

Although nothing is known about the Baker children, it is apparent that they are already distinct from the Bakers of the early 2000s and the Gilbreths of the 1950s. While these children share a home, they have distinct racial and ethnic identities, ranging from Haresh Baker’s South Asian origins to his Black sister Deja Baker and their white brother Seth Baker. Additionally, based on the trailer, there seems to be disability representation, as one of the Baker children looks to be in a wheelchair.

Walter Lang, director of The King and I and There’s No Business Like Show Business, was the driving force behind the 1950 picture Cheaper By the Dozen. This cinematic adaptation adheres to the memoir’s original material to the greatest extent possible. Clifton Webb, who starred in Laura and the 1953 Titanic, as Frank Bunker Gilbreth Sr., an efficiency guru and parent who translated his superior factory-running abilities to family management. Myrna Loy, who was previously renowned for her femme fatale plays, played his wife, Lillian Gilbreth. Together, Loy and Webb brought the Gilbreth family to life with minor deviations from the original narrative. The Gilbreths endure a terrible loss near the film’s conclusion, uniting the siblings and demonstrating the power of a family.
The 2003 version of Cheaper By the Dozen was released more than half a century later. Shawn Levy, the director of the Night at the Museum trilogy and Stranger Things producer, directed the film, which received two Young Artist Awards. The Gilbreth surname was changed to Baker, but the traditional twelve children were retained. Steve Martin, of Father of the Bride and Three Amigos fame, lends his hilarious talents to the part of Tom Baker, the father who is now a college football coach with nothing like the efficiency of Frank Gilbreth’s parenthood. Bonnie Hunt of Jumanji and The Green Mile portrays the more functional mom, Kate Baker, who is leaving the house in the care of Tom for her next novel. Tom’s dilemma as he must choose between his hard work and his family is shown in the film.
