Jessica Springsteen, Bruce Springsteen’s daughter, wins silver in her Olympic debut.
Springsteen and the United States’ equestrian jumping team fell up short of Olympic gold, losing in a running against Sweden on Saturday night.
TOKYO — Bruce Springsteen and his family have gone platinum many times.
It’s also time to make room for some silver.
Jessica Springsteen and the U.s equestrian jumping team far away from Olympic gold, losing in a jump-off vs Sweden on Saturday night, but the Americans still managed to win a record 10th medal in the sport.
It’s the first for Springsteen, 29, the daughter of legendary musicians Bruce and Patti Scialfa, who made her Olympic debut in Tokyo. She and McLain Ward, riding the strong stallion Don Juan van de Donkhoeve, each clipped one rail in the main round Saturday, putting the US in a tie for top with the Swedes with eight penalty points.
Springsteen, Laura Kraut, and Ward all completed the shorter jump-off course cleanly in a total time of 124.2 seconds.
Peder Fredricson, the last Swedish rider, required to complete the circuit in 40.30 seconds or less without making a mistake, and he did it in 39.01 for the country’s fourth gold medal, but first since 1924. The Americans came into this week with three gold medals as well.
When France’s final rider, Penelope Leprevost, entered the course, she had a clean path to a second consecutive gold. Leprevost’s horse rejected 2 times, disqualified her and the rest of the French team,
who needed to finish with much less than five points to win without a jumping-off.
The Americans and Swedes were now deadlocked for first place, necessitating the jump-off.
It’s the United States’ second consecutive silver medal after winning gold in 2008 when Kraut and Ward were also on the squad.

Springsteen stated after Friday’s qualifying round that her parents were watching from home
since competitors were not permitted to bring relatives to the Pandemic Games in Japan.
She was motivated to learn to ride after seeing her mother do it,
and she started her training on the family’s farm in Colts Neck, New Jersey.
Henrik von Eckermann and Malin Baryard-Johnsson, both Swedish riders, shared the gold medal with Fredricson.
