“kendrick lamar swimming pools (Drank)” is a song by Kendrick Lamar, an American rapper. Top Dawg, Aftermath, and Interscope released it on July 31, 2012 as the first single (second overall) off his major-label debut studio album Good Kid, M.A.A.D City (2012). The song was written by Lamar and Tyler “T-Minus” Williams, with the latter also producing it. Dr. Dre and Top Dawg’s engineer Derek “MixedByAli” Ali mixed the song, which pushed Lamar to worldwide fame. After progressively moving up the chart, the song reached number 17 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in its thirteenth week of charting. It started at number 100 on the Hot 100 and rose up the ranks to number 55 and 32 before reaching its peak. “Swimming Pools (Drank)” is also Lamar’s first single to chart in the United Kingdom, where it debuted at number 63.

In August 2012, a music video was released to accompany the song. It appeared in the 2013 game Saints Row IV, the 2014 re-release of Grand Theft Auto V, and a 2013 Grey’s Anatomy episode. On January 26, 2013, Lamar performed the song, as well as his third single “Poetic Justice,” on Saturday Night Live. At the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, the music video was nominated for Best Male Video and Best Hip-Hop Video. At the 56th Annual Grammy Awards, the song was nominated for Best Rap Performance.

background

The song is a reflection on Lamar’s family and social life, as well as his drinking and the peer pressure that comes with it among his friends. In the first line, he recalls his grandfather’s drinking and subsequent death, as well as the circumstances that prompted Lamar to drink.

Music reviewers praised the song when it was first released. The song was named the 34th greatest of 2012 by Rolling Stone. It was voted one of the best five hip hop songs of 2012 by XXL magazine.

The song debuted at number 100 on the Billboard Hot 100 in its initial week of release and stayed there for another week, but two weeks later, it re-entered the chart and rose up each week, moving from number 90 to 81, 71, and 61. “kendrick lamar swimming pools (Drank)” reached number 55 in its tenth week, then entered the top 40 of the Hot 100 at number 32 the following week, climbing to number 25 before peaking at number 17. The song debuted at number 63 on the UK Singles Chart and remained in the top 100 for one week. The song is Lamar’s third highest-charting solo single on the Billboard Hot 100, behind “DNA,” which debuted at number four and peaked at number one, and “HUMBLE,” which debuted at number two and peaked at number one (though his features on “Fuckin’ Problems” and “Bad Blood” reached the top ten in the US), as well as the UK Singles Chart.

The music video, directed by Jerome D, debuted on 106 & Park on August 3, 2012. “In his new video for ‘kendrick lamar swimming pools (Drank),’ Kendrick Lamar defies gravity, floating and tumbling in suspended space as liquor bottles fly skyward and shatter against the ceiling,” according to a review in Rolling Stone. On a hazy rhythm, the rapper reflects on the highs and lows of alcohol intake, as well as the feeling of confidence it gives the drinker. Lamar raps alone for the most of the video, yet color-filtered views of a booze-soaked rager pierce through the more meditative sequences.”

On the Target deluxe version of Good Kid, M.A.A.D City, an additional track featuring his Black Hippy comrades Ab-Soul, Jay Rock, and Schoolboy Q, as well as musicians Bruno Mars, Travis Scott, T.I., 2 Chainz, and Ayo & Teo, was added.

On March 14, 2013, producer Dev Hynes posted a remix of the Mutya Keisha Siobhan song on his own SoundCloud profile. The song “Lay Down in Swimming Pools” contains an interpolation of the original Lamar song. “Just completed recording new music with Mutya, Keisha, and Siobhan, and the ladies felt like having a little fun at the conclusion of the final session — enjoy!!,” Hynes later remarked. A remix of the song was also released by Lloyd and August Alsina.

The Meaning Behind Kendrick Lamar’s “kendrick lamar swimming pools (Drank)” Lyrics

“Swimming Pool (Drank)” is one of Kendrick Lamar’s notable singles off his second full-length album, good kid, m.A.A.d city. Despite the fact that the song and album from which it originates are over four years old, many people still misunderstand the meaning of the lyrics, probably owing to the song’s bridge and chorus’ connotation.

The opening stanza of “Swimming Pools (Drank)” is crucial to grasping the song’s concept. The first phrase is about him “reminiscing about my years [as] a youngster observing a household that indulged grownups in booze,” according to kendrick lamar swimming pools are a metaphor for overindulgent drinking and the consequent fight for buoyancy, both physical and mental, after being engulfed by the liquid; the reference to his Grandfather’s “golden flask” and “backstroking” in the second line is correlative to the song’s title;

Even if you aren’t familiar with Kendrick Lamar’s past, the verse provides context for how to understand the song’s structure. Because of the natural transition into the chorus, the final lyrics of the first verse are crucial.

I was in a dark room with loud music, about to make a commitment.

More significantly, the segue is Lamar’s way of signaling a shift in perspective.

“Why are you just babysitting two or three shots, Nigga?”

Kendrick’s changed voice — a helium-like quality signaling Lamar’s conscience – marks the start of the next verse:

Now, open your head and listen to me, Kendrick

The point of view switches directly in the second verse, as opposed to the first verse moving into the chorus.

I’m going to drown in some poison if I take another one down, abusing my limit.

As the lines inside verses get more fragmented, the changing points of view become more frequent.

I bike, you ride, we both ride.

The wordplay of “shot” in this section of the song is remarkable, since it compares a shot of booze to the harm caused by a bullet. Because it implies a frightened “life flashing before your eyes”-esque interiority – the cacophony of thoughts that precedes one succumbing to the water – the lyric itself adds to the swimming pool image.
