One common misconception is that anything black is the norm in the design industry. But anything Issey Miyake is more aspirational. The famous black turtleneck worn by Steve Jobs was made by Miyake. Beginning with his crinkle fabrics in the 1980s, Zaha Hadid turned Miyake into a wardrobe essential. But the pleated clothing line from Miyake’s 1988 Pleats Please collection seems to be the go-to look for parties in the art world as well as openings of galleries. He believed in “style that would not be restricted to a particular age or profession, and which would be inspired by current aesthetics,” which is where the phrase came from. The clothing items maintain their shape no matter how long they are packed in a suitcase and are comfortable enough to wear all day. Rafael de Cardenas, an interior designer, recently told Town & Country that sporting Homme Plissé clothing from Miyake is “a good way to look smart when you’re actually sporting sweatpants.” In order to achieve his ultimate goal of creating clothing that represented contemporary life, or as he stated in 1999, “to try to bring answers to those who are asking themselves questions about our age and how we should live in it,” the designer conceptualised garments in the same way that an architect might: in terms of structure and volume, experimenting with material and manufacturing processes. Miyake passed away on August 5 in Tokyo at the age of 84 from liver cancer.

Miyake, who was born in Hiroshima in 1938, developed an interest in design after seeing two bridges that the city’s main thoroughfare, which sculptor Isamu Noguchi referred to as “the spiritual support of the people,” had been built. Since fashion wasn’t covered in the curriculum at Tama Art University in Tokyo, he studied graphic design there before eventually relocating to Paris in 1965 to pursue a dressmaking degree. He established the Miyake Design Studio in 1970.
