Herbstreit predicts an UCLA upset, but the rest of the team chooses the Tigers. Also, check out Derek Stingley’s gameday story about his journey to LSU.
LSU football kicks off their 2021 season tonight in Los Angeles versus UCLA, and the College Gameday team had a lot to say about it.
Desmond Howard and David Pollack of ESPN believe LSU will win in Los Angeles, but Kirk Herbstreit and Lee Corso believe UCLA will shock the No. 16 rated Tigers.
“LSU wants to improve on what we saw a year ago, particularly on defense,” Howard said. “They’re going to put people on an island; they’ve got [Derek] Stingley and Ricks, and they’re going to man those guys up because UCLA can run the ball.”
According to Sports Illustrated’s predictions, LSU will win the game, with three experts, Ross Dellenger, Richard Johnson, and John Garcia, all selecting the purple and gold to win, and two analysts preferring UCLA to win.
The ESPN team created a feature piece on LSU cornerback Derek Stingley’s journey to Baton Rouge and why remaining close to family was so essential to him as part of the collegiate gameday festivities. The full-length feature is available to watch below.

“Don’t be shocked to see Stingley on offense tonight versus UCLA,” ESPN reporter Gene Wojciechowski concluded the piece. Since his freshman season, the notion of Stingley playing offense has discussed behind the scenes.
This summer, it’s really come to the fore, and the club was even planning some plays for him until a fall injury caused him to miss much of fall camp. With Stingley returning to practice this week,
it’ll be fascinating to see whether LSU incorporates any special plays into the system for him,
since it’s hard to see him playing a major role in the offense.
