Moldovan club FC Sheriff Tiraspol beats Real Madrid in stunning UEFA Champions League upset
FC Sheriff
In Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League Group D encounter at the Santiago Bernabeu,
La Liga giants Real Madrid were expected to comfortably handle Moldovan outfit Sheriff Tiraspol (a team established in 1997 with a bizarre background).
Instead, one of the greatest shocks in recent Champions League history was served up to the soccer world.
Sheriff, the first Moldovan team to reach the UCL group stages,
took the lead early on when Jasrubek Yakhshiboev headed in a cross in the 25th minute against a sloppy Real Madrid defense.
However, after Karim Benzema equalized from his penalty in the second half,
it seemed like Real Madrid would at least get a point – although a dismal one.
Real Madrid, after all, had 29 shot attempts and had the upper hand in possession.
Then came Sebastien Thill’s game-winning goal.
