No. 2 overall recruit cornerback Travis Hunter switched his commitment from Florida State to Jackson State on Wednesday, becoming the first 5-star high school football prospect to sign with an FCS team since ESPN began its rankings in 2006.
Preliminary indications that Deion Sanders would pull off something historic were made before the early signing period even began, and now the Jackson State coach has pulled away a five-star defensive back from his former school, the University of Mississippi.
He had been committed to Florida State since March 2020 for 6-foot-1, 165-pound prospect Hunter from Collins High School in Suwanee, Georgia.
“Florida State has always been a beacon for me,” Hunter wrote in a tweet on Wednesday. The Seminoles have always been a part of my life, and there was no doubt in my mind that I would one day play for them.”
In some cases, we’re called to step into a future that’s greater than the one we’ve ever imagined for ourselves. Jackson State University is where I see my future.”
Three baseball caps were on the table in front of Hunter as he prepared to make his announcement at the signing ceremony: Florida State, Auburn and Georgia. –
Unzipped his sweatshirt to reveal a T-shirt that read “Believe” one by one. After that, he grabbed a Jackson State hat that had been tossed to him from the crowd and put it on.
For the first time since 2007, Jackson State University has won a SWAC championship.
In the course of his recruiting process, Hunter had visited Georgia, which sparked speculation that he was considering a switch to the Bulldogs. According to Hunter’s social media posts, he is a Seminole and will not be decommitting from the team in October.
Afterward, Hunter made a trip to Jackson State University in November to see the team defeat Alcorn State.
Football has a long history at historically black colleges and universities, Hunter wrote in his blog. It’s something I’d like to be a part of both the past and the future of.” The reason I’m making this decision now is so that others can follow in my footsteps, making it a little easier for the next player to recognize that HBCUs may be everything you want and more.”
There were three other ESPN 300 recruits who signed with Sanders: quarterback Shedeur Sanders (class of 2021) and linebacker/defensive back Katron Evans (class of 2022).
Since then, Hunter has overtaken Shedeur Sanders as Jackson State’s highest-ranked recruit.
