OnlyFans to prohibit sexually explicit content beginning in October
Starting October 1st, the video-sharing service OnlyFans
which is most known for its creators’ pornographic movies and pictures, will ban sexually explicit material.
The company claims it is implementing the adjustments as a result of demand
from its banking and payment provider partners, as first reported by Bloomberg.
“We must update our content rules in order to guarantee the long-term viability of our platform and to continue to host an inclusive community of artists and fans,”
OnlyFans stated in an email to The Verge.
Creators on the platform will be permitted to upload nude photos as long as they follow the network’s acceptable use guidelines.
“OnlyFans is dedicated to the highest standards of safety and content control of any social platform,”

the company said, adding that further information
would be provided in the coming days.
OnlyFans claims to have more than 2 million artists and 130 million users, with the site claiming to have generated more than $5 billion in revenue.
The site made $2 billion in sales last year (of which OnlyFans receives a 20 percent cut).
According to a story from Axios, the company is looking
for investors at a value of more than $1 billion but has had trouble attracting them
due to the growth of porn on the site (Axios adds the company didn’t mention pornography at all in its presentation deck to investors).
Despite its potential to attract attention and offer a safer working environment for sex workers, internet pornography is a difficult sell for investors.
Remember that in 2018, when Verizon was about to sell Tumblr to Automattic, the blogging service permanently prohibited adult material,
which was a very divisive decision at the time.
OnlyFans released its first monthly transparency report for July on Thursday,
“as part of our commitment to safety and openness,” along with the statement regarding sexually explicit material.
