PSG’s flawless start to the new Ligue 1 season came to an end with a 2-0 defeat to Rennes on Sunday.
In spite of starting Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar from the start, the Parisians failed to muster a single shot on goal in their trip to mid-table Rennes after winning all eight of their league games.
Gaetan Laborde and Flavian Tait each scored once after the break to give Rennes a historic win.
The Paris Saint-Germain club is still in first place despite surrendering its first points of the season, but the defeat raises new concerns about the team’s overall balance.
Three of the world’s top players, Mbappe, Messi, and Neymar, showed glimpses of link-up play in the first half.
Against Manchester City on Tuesday, Lionel Messi scored his first goal for PSG, but his signature free-kick hit the underside of the crossbar instead.
PSG failed to break the deadlock despite some beautiful play, allowing Rennes to score twice in the last minutes to win the match.
Prior to the halftime whistle, Laborde guided home a volley, and Tait increased the home team’s lead with a sweep following the restart.
