'People distraught': At least 6 dead, 12 injured after Sacramento shooting rampage; police searching for suspect

Sacramento gun rampage leaves six dead and 12 injured; police are on the hunt for a culprit.

At least six people were killed in a shooting spree in downtown Sacramento on Sunday, sparking a manhunt for the assailant or assailants.

There was a huge crowd gathered in an area when police arrived at the site around 2 a.m. Sunday, according to Chief Kathy Lester. As they waded through the bloodshed, counting fatalities, the police originally reported “several victims” near the State Capitol.

According to the Sacramento Police Department, at least 18 people were shot, and 12 of them are currently being treated at local hospitals.

Several blocks were littered with shards of glass and evidence markers. On Twitter, police said that they were aware of a possible altercation in a social media video soon before the shooting. There were no quick arrests, and a public evidence-sharing platform was established.

To that end, Lester pleaded with anyone who may have seen something or may have video to get in touch with the authorities.

Sacramento church shooting leaves five dead after a dad kills his children and then commits suicide.

On Twitter, a video of individuals rushing in the street was accompanied by gunshots. The scene was crowded with emergency vehicles and other first responders.

Kelsey Schar, who was staying in the Citizen Hotel’s fourth floor room, reported hearing gunshots and seeing flashes. She witnessed “a person running and simply shooting” from the window.

In the words of neighbourhood organiser and gun control advocate Berry Accius, “I was there within minutes of the shooting.”

As Accius noted to the local news station ABC10, “a lot of victims with blood.” “You could see the fear and confusion in the faces of the people who didn’t know if their loved ones were still alive, as they ran and tried to figure out what was going on. It was a horror show.”

The mother of Sergio Harris waited outside the cordoned-off location on Sunday, hoping to hear from the authorities about her son. She informed the Sacramento Bee that Sergio Harris had gone to a nightclub in London late on Saturday and that the family hadn’t heard from him since.

‘We simply want to know what happened to him,’ Pamela Harris said. “Facing the prospect of not knowing anything is difficult.””

One of the six people killed was Sergio Harris, according to his relatives.

‘My kid was a very vibrant young man,’ Pamela Harris told KCRA 3 of her son. “A joy to be around, he was always smiling and had a great sense of humour.

Keep out of people’s way. It’s absurd that something like this could happen. At this point, I’m at a loss on what to do. I can’t believe this is happening. It’s as though I’m in a hallucinatory state right now.”

Lester stated that the number of attackers and whether or not the victims were targeted were unknown.

The families of the victims were given access to information at City Hall, which was manned by city staff and police. The Golden One Center, where the NBA’s Sacramento Kings play, has been blocked off by police and the investigation is ongoing. The crime scene was described as “extremely sophisticated and complicated” by Lester, who did not disclose specifics on the type of gun used.”

Lester added that some of the injured were carried to the hospital by ambulance, while others went on their own or were picked up by friends. Their health status remained a mystery.

One person was murdered and 11 others were injured in a shooting at an outdoor event in Dallas, according to authorities.

A month ago, a man opened fire on a Sacramento church, killing his three children before turning the gun on himself, killing five people in total, according to investigators. A fifth individual was killed in the incident.

The Bee said that Sunday’s tragedy appeared to be the city’s greatest mass shooting ever. According to the Washington, D.C.-based Gun Violence Archive, the six killings are the most in the country this year, along with the attacks in Wisconsin in January and Texas in February.

Gun violence has been dubbed “the scourge of our city, state, and nation” by Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg in a series of tweets. As of just two weeks ago, Lester, who took on the position, has made reducing gun violence a priority.

‘Words can’t explain my amazement & anguish this morning,’ Steinberg tweeted. There are so many dead and injured that it’s hard to fathom.

“Yet another horrible act of gun violence,” California Gov. Gavin Newsom expressed his sorrow to the victim in a statement. In response to a question, he said his office was keeping an eye on the situation.

At this point, we only know that another mass shooting has taken place, leaving families bereaved and maimed as well as a grieving community in its wake “Newsom stated. “We must pledge to put a stop to the carnage caused by gun violence, which is still a catastrophe in our society.
