THIS PITTS (AP) — PITTSBURGH Finally, Jon Gruden’s lengthy, grueling, multi-state reconstruction effort can come to a close.
For the Las Vegas Raiders, the swagger might be back. It is definitely the deep ball.
Derek Carr tossed for 382 yards and 2 touchdowns to Henry Ruggs in the middle of the 4th quarter with a beautiful 61-yard strike as the Raiders overthrew Pittsburgh on Sunday, 26-17.
Not bad for a club that plays on the opposite side of the nation for a short week without any offensive equilibrium. Especially when the Steelers lost their standout outside linebacker T.J. Watt in the second quarter for a groin injury.
“Frankly, every time (watt) is on the field, it wraps up everything,” Carr said, adding later, “If he is out of the game, you realize he is gone. We manage our things and trust our people in Las Vegas.”
Surely it seemed like that.
In Watt’s absence, Carr shredded secondary Pittsburgh, finishing 16 of 21 in the second half for 263 yards, including a nine-yard tipple for Foster Moreau in the third quarter, with an arrow for Ruggs staying 9/35 which gave Las Vegas all the margin it needed.
Carr remarked of Ruggs: “You just see that equipment that not a lot of human beings have. “For me, it’s making fun.”
The rookie Najee Harris converted the first touchdown of his career that pulled the Steelers from 16-14, including the early fourth quarter for the 25-yard catch-and-running race.
The reaction was quick from the Raiders (2-0). As a third and 10-year-old, Ruggs had enough time to step up and lift her to a stranded Ruggs, who ran by and into the last eight meetings between Pittsburgh’s Minkah Fitzpatrick and Ahkello Witherspoon as the Raiders defeated the Steelers for the sixth time.
Gruden remarked to Ruggs, “Not a lot of players can run that quick and track this ball. “Surely it’s been a great play. The protection, the rotating door at the crucial time, the upside-down and tossing… there were enough excellent things to do about it.
Ruggs completed five catches, with one of four Raiders having five pick-ups spreading it across 113 yards.
“We’re full of playmakers,” remarked Ruggs. “We’ve always had people ready to step up.”
The Steelers kept Darren Waller pretty tight in Las Vegas until it was important. With little over 2 minutes left, Waller received the fourth field goal from Daniel Carlson, which gave the ultimate margin and sent the first complete crowd of people to Heinz Field in over 21 months to reach the exit.
“I won’t claim that London’s Bridge will collapse, but we must learn from it,” stated Cam Heyward, the Steelers’ defensive end. “We must continue to hammer on errors and realize how great these plays (get off) are.” “
One week after a surprise was pulled off in the opening in Buffalo, Pittsburgh started out again.
No second-half surge will take place this time.
Only 38 yards on 10 carriages were managed by Harris, once again, to run behind Pittsburgh’s retooled, offensive line. Five catches for 43 yards were added to the first round of selection, and an acrobatic line was added to his first touchdown.
Nevertheless, the attack only worked and began. Roethlisberger completed 27 out of 40 assignments and took 10 hits and 2 bags to play behind an offensive line containing two rookies in Dan Moore Jr. left-hand tack and Kendrick Green’s center.
“My play isn’t good enough right now,” stated Roethlisberger. “We have an opportunity to win the soccer game if I perform well.”
The failure of the offense to control the ball prompted the Steelers to suddenly defend themselves against injuries on the field for extended periods. For more than 34 minutes, the Raiders controlled the ball and, after half-time, had 286 yards of their 425.
The addition turner
In the fourth quarter, after an incident with Raiders defensive tactician Solomon Thomas, veteran right-wing Trai Turner was thrown out. Video showed Turner spitting Thomas, and the arbitrators threw him out of the game.
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin thinks Turner was just spit on.
Tomlin said: “Trai’s not a young man. “He’s not emotional too much. It’s a lineman… I didn’t think he was booted from the football game sufficiently to do so. This is just my view.”
INJURIES
Raiders. Alex Leatherwood departed with an oblique injury in the second quarter and didn’t return……S Dallin Leavitt assessed for congestion. The cramps treated by the CB, Casey Hayward Jr.
Steelers: DT Steelers: Tyson Alualu is going to be sidelined indefinitely in the first quarter with a right ankle break… In the last game, WR Diontae Johnson suffered a knee injury… Because of severe damage, CB Joe Haden and LB Devin Bush have been sidelined.
