The Warriors’ Stephen Curry and the Warriors’ return from the All-Star break with a thumping of the Blazers.
The Golden State Warriors beat the Portland Trail Blazers 132-95 on Thursday night after returning from the All-Star break. Stephen Curry had 18 points and 14 assists.
For the Warriors, who had lost four of their previous five games, Klay Thompson added 18 points.
As Curry stated, “It was a terrific way to come back from the break and establish ourselves on both ends of the court.”
In the second half, the Warriors led by 37 points and rested their starters in the fourth quarter. Golden State saw eight players finish in double figures for the first time since 2009.
“It was nice not having to play the fourth quarter and watching our young players gain some experience and play well,” Thompson said.
Portland, who had won four straight games coming into the break, was led by Anfernee Simons, who scored 24 points.
Portland has already announced that centre Jusuf Nurkic will miss at least the next four weeks due to plantar fasciitis. The injury was the latest setback for the Blazers, who are already shorthanded after star Damian Lillard underwent stomach surgery.
Drew Eubanks, a former Oregon State player, started at centre for Portland coach Chauncey Billups. Eubanks, who was in his fourth NBA season at the time, was traded to Toronto at the deadline as part of the Goran Dragic deal with San Antonio, but he was subsequently released. On Tuesday, he signed a 10-day deal with Portland.

In the first quarter, Portland had a 29-19 lead, but it was short-lived. After a 15-3 run, Jordan Poole’s 3-pointer put the Warriors ahead 50-38.
Golden State increased its lead to 20 points at halftime, leading 70-57.Before halftime, Curry had 18 points and 13 assists, his sixth career double-double and first since December 2017.
Warriors coach Steve Kerr stated, “Steph was terrific tonight.” I admired his patience and the manner in which he led the squad tonight. He had a fantastic game. “
Thompson continued, “(Curry) has always been able to get away with it in this manner. “His scoring is so good that it’s easy to ignore him at times, “Thompson said.
With only 16 points in the third quarter, the Blazers’ difficulties persisted.
“I felt they worked hard and did a good job, but they ran into a juggernaut,” Billups said. “They went off on us there, scoring 39 points in the second quarter, which really affected us and we couldn’t recover.”
BINDING TIES
Gary Payton II started for Golden State despite a shin ailment that had him doubtful coming into the game. Like his father, Payton attended Oregon State and earned a standing ovation from the Portland crowd during his introductions.
There was a Washington State connection between Thompson and Portland’s CJ Elleby and former Cougars quarterback Gardner Minshew, who was among the spectators at the game, in addition to the Oregon State links.
