HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SOUTH CAROLINA – Spending his birthday at Harbour Town Golf Links is as safe a bet as you’ll find in the world of golf when it comes to traditions.
Since 1986, Davis Love III has performed 32 times at this venue. A few days before his debut, he celebrated his 22nd birthday. Love beamed warmly at the sight of a birthday cake marking his 58th birthday on the eve of yet another RBC Heritage.
He’s won five times, placed second once, and finished third once. When he’s at Hilton Head, he’s treated like king. But on this particular day, the cake would have to do as his sole present, since Love would be serving as Presidents Cup captain later in the year, and his birthday celebration would be spent answering questions.

What, for example, will Tiger Woods’ involvement be at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte on September 22-25?
“Any part he wants,” Love said emphatically. “We had to pull him off the sofa a little last winter and spring to get him interested in the (2021) Ryder Cup, but once we did, he was quite engaged and enjoyed it.”
“You’re not captain anymore, I’m going to be the captain,” Love joked, “and we’ll definitely have to speak about that one.” However, anything else (is open). Whatever he wants to do, whether it’s co-captain, assistant captain, or player.”
Love nodded when asked whether he feels Woods would be able to participate on the Presidents Cup squad in five months.
Why?
“I didn’t believe he’d ever play again,” Love added, “but he proved us wrong.” “Then I didn’t believe he’d be able to walk 72 holes at Augusta, since that’s one of our most difficult walks – and he proved us wrong once again.”
So Love said that continuing to distrust Woods would almost certainly guarantee a Presidents Cup return.
“Will he be able to pull it off?” “I’ll simply say no, he won’t be able to do it because he won’t be able to play enough golf,” Love said. “What could be a greater tale than him winning a golf event and being in the discussion than him winning the Masters, The Open Championship, and fighting his way back?”

Love said the one he received from Woods was the most meaningful of all the compliments he’s gotten since being chosen Presidents Cup captain for the first time (he’s a two-time Ryder Cup captain).
“All right, you’re captain in Charlotte, it’s the correct thing to do at this moment,” he adds.
Love and his assistants, two of whom were selected this week – Zach Johnson and Fred Couples – will make the calls from now on. Love will begin paying attention to the rankings now that April has here and the first big championship of the season has been completed. When he does, he’ll notice some names that may surprise some people, athletes who haven’t previously played for the national teams.
Nothing will surprise Love, he said. “I’m preparing for a different squad (than the Ryder Cup team that defeated Europe 19-9 last year),” he said. We won’t get the same 12 as last time, I stated (at the Ryder Cup). That’s never how it goes.”
Two of the top six automatic choices – Sam Burns (No. 2) and Talor Gooch (No. 6) – have never played on a Presidents Cup or Ryder Cup squad. Tom Hoge, Jason Kokrak, Max Homa, and Will Zalatoris, who play in the Nos. 6-12 positions, have not played for either team.
Meanwhile, legends like Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Xander Schauffele, Tony Finau, Daniel Berger, and Bryson DeChambeau have dropped out of the top 12.
“I’ve never been too worked up over it this early in the year,” Love added. I don’t start paying attention till the Masters. There are a lot of points to be earned.”
In any case, he didn’t seem bothered.
“You’re never without a flip-flop” (from one team to the next). That’s one of the best things about it: you get to hang out with the gorgeous men. However, the attractive males from last year may not be the same as the hot guys this year.”
