Snake Island Defiant Soldiers Are Alive and Well Despite Previous Reports, the Military Says
Despite prior reports to the contrary, the Ukrainian military now claims that the soldiers assaulted by a Russian cruiser on Snake Island last week are “alive and healthy,” despite the fact that the island’s infrastructure has been destroyed.
According to a statement on the Ukrainian Navy’s official Facebook page on Monday, “the Marines and frontier guards seized by the Russian occupants on Snake Island… are alive and healthy!”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced last week that all 13 Ukrainians slain in Thursday’s attack on the island will be granted the title of Hero of Ukraine posthumously.

According to the Navy’s statement on Monday, “Russian propaganda is attempting to disseminate the ‘news’ that Ukrainian authorities have ‘forgotten’ and ‘buried’ their subordinates.”
According to CNN, sources stated that the soldiers on the island first resisted Russia’s onslaught but finally surrendered due to a lack of ammunition.
On Saturday, following the initial Russian bombardment, the Ukrainian military reported on social media that a civilian ship “was deployed to the island to carry out a humanitarian mission to rescue the casualties,” but that individuals on board were “illegally detained by the Russians.”
“The illegal seizure of a non-combatant civilian ship that did not carry out any military tasks is a breach of the norms and customs of war as well as international humanitarian law,” stated the Monday post, signed by the Public Relations Service Command of the Navy of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Snake Island, also known as Zmiinyi Island, has been cited as a target since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine last week.

According to unconfirmed audio, Ukrainian forces were seizing the island, which is located approximately 20 miles off shore, when a Russian ship came and a Russian officer issued a harsh warning.
A speaker could be heard warning the Ukrainian soldiers in the audio footage of what allegedly happened next: “This is a military cruiser from Russia. To minimise violence and unnecessary losses, I advise you lay down your weapons and surrender. You’ll be blasted if you don’t.”
After a brief exchange, one Ukrainian soldier allegedly said, “Russian warship, go f—- yourselves.”
According to a military statement issued Monday, the Marines on the island “bravely resisted the onslaught of the Russian occupants twice but were unable to continue defending the island.”
According to the Ukrainian Navy, Russian forces “totally demolished the island’s infrastructure: lighthouses, towers, antennae, and so on,” and contact was cut off.
“Repeated attempts to reach the employees and learn their fate were futile,” according to the post. “And the persistent pounding by Russian Federation boats and planes made it impossible to send relief to the Marines.”
The message continued: “To summarise, we would like to point out that the adversary has once again proven its essence. And once again, he demonstrated that his acts and words are devoid of faith and truth. And we eagerly await the arrival of our brothers and sisters.”

Russia’s invasion on Ukraine continues, with armies pushing from the north, south, and east after the nation was invaded on February 24. The details of the attack and the battle are changing by the day, but this is Europe’s first big land conflict in decades, with hundreds of people killed or injured, including more than 100 children.
The invasion, authorised by Russian President Vladimir Putin, has elicited international outrage and increasingly harsh economic penalties against Russia. Several nations have also committed financial or military support to Ukraine, whose president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has both begged for peace negotiations and urged his country to resist.
