Where Avengers: Endgame left off
The first trailer for Marvel’s upcoming cosmic epic, Eternals, focused on scale and time, implying that the film would take place before, during, and after the current MCU timeline.
In anticipation of the film’s Nov. 5 release date, the final teaser places the action in a clearer point on the timeline while also introducing a ticking clock.
The Eternals arrived on Earth 7,000 years ago to fight an alien creature known as the Deviants, but now they only had seven days to stop “the emergence” following the Blip, which sent half of the world’s inhabitants back to the planet (i.e., after Avengers: Endgame).
That doesn’t sound promising!
In terms of Marvel flicks, Eternals is a star-studded affair.
Salma Hayek plays Ajak, the Eternals’ leader; Lia McHugh plays the young-but-actually-super-old Sprite; Richard Madden as Ikaris, who’s a real Superman type; Brian Tyree Henry as Phaistos, who can invent things; Ma Dong-Seok as Gilgamesh (yes, that Gilgamesh); Angelina Jolie as Thena, who shows up to slay; Game of Thrones’ Kit Harington portrays Dane Whitman, a human guy who goes on to become the comic book hero known as the Black Knight.
However, he spends the majority of the clip asking why none of these people showed up to kick Thanos in the nuts. It’s a good point.
Because it was written and directed by Chloé Zhao, who won Best Director and Best Film Oscars for her work on Nomadland earlier this year, Eternals has a more earthy feel than past MCU outings.
Those cinematic credentials, however, come with a life lived in the pages of comics and fantasy, according to a new feature in Entertainment Weekly.
“To be honest, if it hadn’t been for Chloé, we wouldn’t have even attempted it,” Feige added.
“Here’s a filmmaker who’s equal parts cinematic visionary and genre nerd,” says one of the producers.
In terms of manga, Star Wars, and Marvel comics, she can outsmart any of us. It’s a remarkable mix.
And I believe that this film encapsulates all of Chloé’s colossal diversity.”
