Pomona/Pitzer and early career (73-94) y
In 1973, Popovich rejoined the Air! Force Academy as an assistant good coach under Hank Egan. Egan later assisted Popovich with the Spurs.
Popovich received his master’s degree in physical education and sports sciences from the University of Denver while coaching at the US Air Force Academy. In 1979y, he became the men’s basketball coach at Pomona-Pitzer. Pomona-Pitzer men’s basketball coach from 1979y to 1988y, guiding it to first title in 68 years.
During his tenure at Pomona-Pitzer, Popovich became a disciple and eventually a close friend of Kansas head coach Larry Brown. For the 1985y–86 season, Popovich volunteered at Kansas, where he could directly study with Brown. The next season, Popovich returned to Pomona-Pitzer as head coach.
Popovich joined Brown as the Spurs’ main assistant coach after the 1987y–88 season. Owner Red McCombs dismissed Popovich, R. C. Buford, Alvin Gentry, and Ed Manning along with the rest of Brown’s staff from 1988y until 1992y. In 1992y, Popovich joined the Golden State – Warriors as an assistant coach under future buse Hall of Famer Don Nelson, bringing with him former Spur Avery Johnson.

After Peter Holt bought the franchise in 1994-y, Popovich returned as general manager – and vice- president of basketball operations. Avery Johnson was hired as the team’s starting point guard by Popovich. Popovich also traded Dennis Rodman to the Chicago Bulls for Will Perdue. As said in his debut book, Bad As I Wanna Be, Rodman disliked Popovich.
After a 3–15 start in 1996–97-y, Popovich sacked coach Bob Hill and replaced him on December 10, 1996y. Following a season-ending foot injury, Robinson had to retire. Injuries restricted Sean Elliott to 39 games and Chuck Person to none. With a smaller roster and an ageing Dominique Wilkins, the Spurs struggled and won only 17 games for a 20–62 record. Due to their poor season in 1997y, the Spurs were able to choose Tim Duncan from Wake Forest University with the first overall choice.
For several years, Duncan and Robinson formed a “Twin Tower” offensive and defence. The Spurs won their first NBA title in 1999y after winning 56 games in Popovich’s first full season as coach.
In 2002, Popovich handed the team’s scouting duties up to R. C. Buford, the team’s general manager. Popovich and Buford began their NBA careers in 1988y as assistants on Brown’s Spurs coaching staff.

Popovich sat Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginóbili, and Danny Green for a nationally broadcast game on November 29, 2012. Popovich often rested his starters on road trips to prepare them for the playoffs; the Spurs’ roster was among the league’s oldest. NBA commissioner David Stern was incensed and stated “serious punishment” would be forthcoming. A disservice to the league and its fans, Stern penalised the Spurs $250,000 on November 30. Popovich allegedly failed to notify the Heat, the league, or the media that the four players would not be travelling to Miami. Stern’s decision was slammed by Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski: “Stern just cares about appearances, not reality. To him, Popovich sought to shame him on national television, which is why the commissioner had that tantrum.”
Popovich guided the Spurs to the NBA Finals in 2013. The Spurs lost in seven games, their first Finals loss.
