With a thrilling 34-28 overtime victory against the Chargers, the Chiefs seize control of the AFC West.
The Kansas City Chiefs faced a loaded deck.

I’m playing after a four-day break.
I’m flying two time zones west for a crucial division fight.
Three defensive starters are out, including defensive lineman Chris Jones, linebacker Willie Gay Jr., and cornerback L’Jarius Sneed.
Jones, Gay, and wide receiver Josh Gordon are all out due to COVID-19 rules.
The Kansas City Chiefs were always going to struggle against the Los Angeles Chargers on Thursday Night Football at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
But no one told Patrick Mahomes and the five-time defending AFC West champions.
Sixty minutes wasn’t enough time to determine the division championship game, which ended 66 seconds into overtime when tight end Travis Kelce grabbed a pass over the middle, doubled back to lose linebacker Drue Tranquil, then cut up field and outran five Chargers defenders to the end zone.

“That was a fantastic moment,” stated Mahomes. “I don’t recall ever being a part of a walk-off touchdown.”
Kansas City (10-4) has already won seven consecutive games with the 34-28 victory, and it currently leads the AFC West by two wins over Los Angeles (8-6) with three games left.
“If I could leap, I’d jump with joy,” Kansas City coach Andy Reid said. “However, that locker room was fantastic. It was incredible… It was comparable to a walk-off home run in baseball. You watch the celebration and have a walk-off like. You watch the men bouncing about, and you realize how much effort goes into it. That’s quite pleasant.”
Give respect to the Chiefs’ depleted defense, which made goal-line stands to close the first half and another early in the fourth quarter in a gutsy effort given the circumstances.
“That defense is rocking right now, and his (defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo’s) preparation has been fantastic,” Reid said.
The Chargers only scored on three of six goal-to-go opportunities and were stopped on another fourth-down attempt in field-goal range.
“That’s how we’re going to play,” stated LA coach Brandon Staley. “When we have a quarterback like ours and an offense like ours, that’s the way we’re going to play, because that’s exactly how you need to play against Kansas City.”
Early in the fourth quarter, Los Angeles marched 97 yards to the Kansas City 1-yard line, only to have Ben Niemann knife across the middle and meet Joshua Kelley in the backfield.
Tershawn Wharton then pawed the ball free from Kelley, and Niemann, who ended with nine tackles in place of Gay, finally won the arm-wrestling contest for the ball at the bottom of the pile.
Three plays later, the Chiefs’ offense reclaimed it.
Uchenna Nwosu flipped a Mahomes ball to himself for a spectacular interception one drive after Mahomes botched a lame-duck throw to a wide-open Mecole Harman Jr. in the flats on Kansas City’s own fourth-down failure near the goal line.
The following play, Austin Ekeler scored on a 2-yard run, but the Chiefs offense was ready to respond this time.
Mahomes led a 75-yard drive that included a 69-yard throw to Travis Kelce and a 1-yard touchdown pass to Tyreek Hill. It was one of three 75-yard touchdown drives in the last ten minutes and overtime as the offense rallied for the victory.

Melvin Ingram, a former Chargers defensive end, correctly called tails to win the coin toss for the Chiefs in overtime.
“It was like two heavyweights running for each other, and we got the ball last,” Reid said. “I’d like to congratulate Melvin Ingram for winning two coin flips.”
Herbert, who completed 22 of 38 for 236 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception, and Los Angeles never saw the ball again as Kelce’s game-winning 34-yard score concluded a career-high 191-yard night. He had ten receptions and two touchdowns.
Kelce’s previous career high for receiving yards in a game was 168 in a victory against Oakland in December 2018.
Mahomes completed 31 of 47 passes for 410 yards, his sixth 400-yard game of the season, with three touchdowns and one interception. He also tied for the team lead in running yards with 32.
Hill also had 12 receptions for 148 yards and a touchdown.
But it was Kansas City’s defense, headed by rookie linebacker Nick Bolton, who finished with 14 tackles and three passes defensed, that set the tone early.
The Chargers started the game with a 75-yard kickoff return but were held scoreless as Herbert threw four consecutive incompletions from the Chiefs’ 5-yard line.
Unfortunately, following the fourth-down incompletion, tight end Donald Parham Jr. was hurt and had to be carried off the field on a stretcher.
Kansas City drove 95 yards on their opening possession, spearheaded by fullback Michael Burton, who caught a 20-yard screen ball and scored a 7-yard touchdown.
After Nick Bolton deflected a ball for an interception by Anthony Hitchens, a 30-yard Harrison Butker field goal made it 10-0.
“It was wonderful to get one,” said Hitchens, who finished with eight tackles. “It’s been a long time.”
Before halftime, it was all about Los Angeles.
Herbert scored on a 1-yard QB scramble, threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Guyton, then drove the Chargers to the Chiefs’ goal line again in the final seconds before halftime after Joey Bosa forced a Mahomes turnover.
With 3 seconds remaining on fourth-and-goal from the 1, safety Daniel Sorensen swatted away Herbert’s throw to keep the game at four points.
The Chiefs opened the second half with a 33-yard field goal.
Charvaius Ward, who was a game-time decision due to illness, has 10 tackles.
