Who’s in and who’s out for the first preseason game between the Denver Broncos and the Minnesota Vikings?
The time has finally come. The wait is finally over. The Denver Broncos will return to the field for the first time since their heartbreaking defeat to the Las Vegas Raiders in the season finale last year.
Broncos Country will finally get a chance to see some of their favorite players, but the preseason includes risk assessment, so not all of the fan favorites will be in action today.
Who’s on their way out?
Von Miller was bound to be physically maintained as much as possible for the regular season as a seasoned vet coming off a severe injury.
If you look at the preseason throughout the league, this is a common move. Aaron Rodgers, Deandre Hopkins, and Josh Allens of the world will have this week off to keep their bodies in shape in preparation for a tune-up in the coming weeks.
Von falls into the same category as those players and will be given the same treatment.
Courtland Sutton, the Broncos’ top wide receiver, will also sit.
It would have been ideal to see Sutton receive a few repetitions, even if it was just for a single series, but he looks to be out for the first preseason game.
Sutton, another Broncos player returning from a season-ending injury, had appeared to be doing well. He gradually improved, displaying glimpses of his spectacular playmaking ability. There have been no setbacks reported, so Fangio and his teammates are most likely simply taking every care to get Sutton back into playing condition.
The goal is for him to play in at least one preseason game before the regular season begins, but that won’t happen until after today.
Who’s on board?
The Broncos’ quarterback competition is still going strong, and both incumbent Drew Lock and newcomer Teddy Bridgewater expected to play today, barring any unexpected circumstances.
This will be both players’ first game action of the season, and it will be when the QB battle really starts. Both players should have plenty of chances to distinguish themselves through their performance.
Let the fight begin!
While Lock and Bridgewater will be without Sutton, they will have rising sensation Jerry Jeudy to pass to.
If anyone’s stock has grown throughout training camp, it’s without a doubt Jeudy. His on-field performance and route running have wowed teammates and spectators alike.
Jeudy is just a second-year player, and after having his rookie summer totally disrupted by COVID-19, every snap, practice, and other opportunity must have been critical to his ongoing development and the development of team camaraderie.
Expect him to show off his incredible speed and route running to get open and provide an easy target for his quarterbacks.
Other Interesting Facts
Mike Boone, a former Minnesota Viking running back, sustained a quad injury that, according to a club source,
will keep him out for four to six weeks and will not require surgery. Many speculated that Boone’s injury was much more severe when he was carried off the field.
Tim Patrick, a wide receiver, has been kept out of practice lately due to a groin issue. Although it doesn’t seem to be severe, given his long injury history, it would not be unexpected if he sat.
